resident Prabowo Subianto on Monday reaffirmed Jakarta’s commitment to working closely with Singapore on various strategic sectors including investment and energy, hailing what Indonesia’s neighbor has dubbed “a new era” in their bilateral ties.
In his first state visit to Singapore following his inauguration in October, Prabowo attended the annual leaders’ retreat with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong as part of his diplomatic efforts to strengthen Jakarta’s regional partnerships.
The meeting – the first for both recently inaugurated leaders – produced 19 agreements, including the implementation of a defense cooperation agreement (DCA), cross-border electricity trade, a sustainable industrial zone and a bilateral financial agreement between the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) and Bank Indonesia (BI).
“I think this marks the high value we attach to the relationship and the friendship between Singapore and Indonesia,” Prabowo said in a joint statement after his meeting with Wong. “[...] We had a very productive meeting”.
Singapore has been successful in implementing its policies and development plans, Prabowo said, teasing that Indonesia should “copy” some of the policies, such as its low-cost housing and sovereign wealth fund.
“In school, we’re not allowed to copy our friends’ homework or exams. But in real life, why not copy the best practice? […] I hope there’s no copyright,” Prabowo said, adding that he hoped Indonesia’s own sovereign wealth fund Danantara could have similar success as Singapore’s Temasek Holdings.
Prabowo also welcomed Singapore’s offer to assist Indonesia’s food security programs, including through agricultural technology transfers.
