heIndonesian Ulema Council (MUI) deputy chief Din Syamsuddin will soon take thereins of the organization, replacing the late K H Sahal Mahfudz. Din wasnominated during the MUI executive board meeting.

'€œThe plenary meeting [needs to rule on this]. This isn'€™t final,'€ Din said on Wednesday, as quoted by kompas.com.

He said the board'€™s recommendation was in line with an MUI regulation regarding the immediate replacement of the chairman by the deputy chief if the chairman is unable to fulfill his or her obligations.

The same meeting also decided Ma'€™ruf Amin would replace Din as deputy chief. Ma'€™ruf was previously MUI daily caretaker.

Sahal and Din represented the two largest Muslim organizations in the country. Sahal represented the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the largest Muslim organization with more than 40 million members while Din is chairman of the Muhammadiyah, the second largest with around 30 million members. (dic)
