he Medan District Court hassentenced a Malaysian police officer to four years in prison and has fined himRp 800 million (US$ 68,411), after he was proven guilty of possessing crystalmethamphetamine.
The Malaysian police officer, identified as Lance Cpl. Salim bin Muhammad Yusof, was charged with violating Narcotics Law No. 35/2009.
'The fact that he is a police officer, who has the obligation to follow the rules, but chose to act against them, has become the main consideration for the panel while deliberating the punishment,' presiding judge M Isya said on Wednesday.
Salim was caught in possession of 0.5 grams of crystal methamphetamine, locally known as shabu-shabu, by an officer at Polonia International Airport in May last year, immediately after landing.
Commenting on the sentence, Salim, who had declined to appoint a lawyer for his trial, said that he would think over the judgment before giving his opinion on it.
Malaysian Deputy Consul in Medan Nur Azhar Hajis, who was also at the court, said that he would honor the court's sentence.
He said it was the first case in ten years in which a Malaysian police officer was arrested over drug possession in Indonesia. (dic)
