number of the evacuees displaced by the recent eruption of Mt. Kelud in Kediri, East Java, have insisted on remaining at temporary shelters even though the government has downgraded the alert level of the volcano.
"Even though the alert status has been downgraded, scores of evacuees are asking to stay in the shelters because their houses are damaged," said Adi Suwignya, head of the information unit for the Kediri Disaster Mitigation Agency, as quoted by Antara news agency.
He further said that the most of them were from Puncu and Kepung districts, which were hardest hit by the disaster.
According to him, the government was in the process of inventorying damaged houses following the eruption on Feb. 13, 2014.
Existing data showed at least 19,000 houses were damaged, both severely and lightly, in four districts -- Puncu, Kepung, Plosoklaten and Ngancar.
Building materials had been transported to the affected areas to help the victims rebuild their damaged homes, Adi said. (yln)
