South Sumatra Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Djarot Padakova said the clash had taken place near an oil palm plantation in Sungai Ceper village. He said the police now had the area under control.

'€œThe location is currently quiet. The dead victims have already been buried by their families,'€ said Djarot to The Jakarta Post, adding that the injured were being treated at Tulang Bawang General Hospital in Lampung.

Ogan Komering Ilir Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Erwin Rachmat said that 45 personnel had been deployed to the scene to back up the existing 15 officers.

'€œWe are still monitoring the developments in the area, we hope that both groups can refrain from any further hostilities,'€ he said

According to Sungai Menang'€™s district head Bahrul, the clash was a dispute over control of security at the oil palm plantation.(idb/dic)
