n addition to elect members of the House of Representatives (DPR), the first general election in 1955 also selected the members of the Constitutional Assembly (Konstituante), a state body whose main responsibility was to create a new constitution to replace the non-permanent 1950 Constitution (UUDS 1950). Indonesia had the UUDS 1950 after the Republic of the United States of Indonesia (RIS) system collapsed and Indonesia went back to the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI) in 1950.
On Dec. 15, 1955, the government carried out the second election round to choose the 520 Konstituante members. But, at that time, West Papua, which had six Konstituante seats, did not participate in the election. So, there were only 514 seats in the Konstituante as a result of the 1955 general election.
The Konstituante lasted until 1959 when president Sukarno announced his 1959 presidential decree to dismiss the body. The Konstituante failed to create a new constitution and president Sukarno brought back the 1945 Constitution.
The formation of the Konstituante was one of the interesting points of the 1955 general
election.
