igrant Care, an NGO advocating for the rights of Indonesian workers abroad, said it was grateful for the decision by the Kota Bharu High Court in Kelantan, Malaysia, to free Wilfrida Soik.
Wilfrida is an Indonesian migrant worker from East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), who was on death row for the murder of her employer.
Migrant Care, which closely monitored Wilfrida's case and trial, said that Wilfrida did not deserve the death sentence as she was underage and a victim of a human trafficking.
'The court's verdict is proper and fair because the murder was in self defense; to protect herself from torture at the hands of her employer,' said Migrant Care in a release made available to The Jakarta Post Monday.
'The verdict will be a good precedent for cases focusing on the hundreds of Indonesian migrant workers who are on death row,' it went on.
The decision should not be separated from the relentless advocacy effort, which has gone on for four years, by a collaboration of civil society groups, including Migrant Care; members of the Regional Legislative Council (DPRD); the Regional Representatives Council (DPD) and the House of Representatives (DPR); the Catholic Church in Belu; interfaith communities; as well as singer and activist Melanie Subono and netizens who showed their support via the #SaveWilfrida petition on Change.org.
The petition garnered more than 13,000 signatures from dozens of countries, making it one of Change.org's highest supported petitions. (ebf)
