T

he General Elections Commission (KPU) said reruns of the legislative election held in several regions from April 10 to April 13 went smoothly and no problems hindered the process.

'€œNo problems occurred. There were sufficient election materials and officials were ready. In Lampung, which reran the ballot on April 10, voter turnout increased to 97 percent from 87 percent,'€ said KPU commissioner Arief Budiman on Sunday as quoted by Antara news agency.

He was speaking when monitoring the process at Polling Station (TPS) 15 in Kalirungut sub-district, Rungkut district, Surabaya, East Java.

Arief said of the 540,000 TPS nationwide, only around 500 TPS had to hold a second vote. '€œIt was purely due to technical problems. Only 0.1 percent '€” or less than 1 percent '€” of all the polling stations had to hold a rerun,'€ he said.

In Surabaya, Arief said, only a small number of its 9 million ballot papers had incorrect candidates. The commission takes this as a lesson learned, however, Arief said.

In this year'€™s election, he said, the KPU decided to resolve any election-related problems, including accidentally-exchanged ballot papers, by holding a revote.

'€œWe want to protect the votes for the parties and candidate. In 2009, most of the election-related problems were reported to the Constitutional Court,'€ said Arief. (put/ebf)
