he National Awakening Party (PKB) has offered its party chairman Muhaimin Iskandar as a potential vice presidential candidate to parties seeking to form a coalition.
The head of the PKB central executive board, Marwan Jafar, said Muhaimin was the party's strongest vice presidential candidate and there was a general consensus on the subject within the party.
'If our chairman [Muhaiman Iskandar] is nominated as a vice presidential candidate, it would be a proud moment for us,' said Marwan in Jakarta on Sunday as quoted by kompas.com.
He said the PKB had so far spoken to three nationalist parties, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), the Gerindra Party and the Democratic Party.
Marwan further said that the PKB would prefer to form a coalition with nationalist parties rather than Islamic-based parties. 'We are quite realistic, in the sense that we cannot nominate our own presidential candidate as it is unlikely that our votes will be sufficient,' he said.
Of the three nationalist parties mentioned before, Marwan indicated that the PKB would likely be matched with the PDI-P.
'Cak Imin [Muhaimin] is just like a son to Ibu Mega. He communicates well with the PDI-P. These two grass root parties could step in line,' he said.
Marwan said the PKB respected the three potential presidential candidates from the party: dangdut singer Rhoma Irama, former vice president Jusuf Kalla and former Constitutional Court chief justice Mahfud MD.
'However, we have not discussed the vice presidential role with these three figures. Due to the current political dynamic, it is possible that we will give the party with which we will form a coalition option,' said Marwan. (put/ebf)
