The Manpower and Transmigration Ministry handled 2,861 employment disputes throughout 2013, a minister said.

Manpower and Transmigration Minister Muhaimin Iskandar said that conducive relations were key to avoid such disputes in the future.

'€œA conducive relationship between businessmen and workers is key to avoiding employment dismissal [PHK], to increase worker prosperity and to expand employment opportunities,'€ he said in Jakarta on Tuesday as quoted by Antara news agency.

Muhaimin said that to maintain a good industrial relationship, the government must promote bipartite dialogue between employers and workers.

Of the total 2,861 labor disputes last year, 2,468 cases had been handled while 393 were still ongoing as of the beginning of this year.

Among the major causes were differences over wages, extra work pay, holiday bonuses (THR), leave of absence and issues related to the state insurance scheme (Jamsostek).

Although worker rallies continued to occur, Muhaimin said that overall, industrial relations between employers and workers were still relatively favorable. (ebf)
