uspended Medan MayorRahudman Harahap was taken to Tanjung Gusta Penitentiary after the NorthSumatra Prosecutor'€™s Office received a copy of a Supreme Court rulingsentencing Rahudman to prison for five years.

Prosecutors had attempted to pick up Rahudman the night before but faced resistance from Rahudman'€™s family and lawyer.

Tuesday'€™s arrest was made by the prosecutors in cooperation with the police.

Prosecutor Chandra Purnama of the North Sumatra'€™s Prosecutor'€™s Office said it took about 30 minutes to make the arrest.

'€œThe suspect was cooperative and said he was prepared to be arrested,'€ Chandra said on Tuesday.

Rahudman'€™s lawyer, Hasrul Benny Harahap, said he had protested the arrest because he had not received a copy of the ruling.

'€œMy client has decided to obey the law despite the fact that we don'€™t have a copy of the ruling,'€ he said.

Rahudman was previously acquitted by the lower court of embezzling village funds in 2005 when he was South Tapanuli regency secretary.

Prosecutors appealed the verdict. The Supreme Court handed Rahudman a five-year prison term. Prosecutors previously demanded a four-year sentence.(dic)
