Eleven countries to participate in culture festival in Tenggarong

t least 11 countries are scheduled to participate in the Erau art and culture festival in Kutai Kartanegara regency, East Kalimantan, from June 15 to June 22, 2014.

'€œThe art and culture festival will be highlighted by the participation of art teams from the 11 countries, which are members of International Council of Organizations of Folklore Festivals and Folk Art [CIOFF],'€ head of Kutai Kartanegara culture and tourism agency Sri Wahyuni said as quoted by Antara news agency in Tenggarong on Monday.

Erau, which takes place in Tenggarong, is one of Indonesia's oldest cultural festivals, It has also been a Kutai Kartanegara empire tradition since the 13th century.

The 11 countries are the Netherlands, Italy, Hungary, Latvia, Russia, Crotia, the Phillipines, South Korea, Columbia, Egypt and Bangladesh.

At least 259 members of art teams from the 11 countries will take part in the festival, Sri said, adding it would be the second participation by CIOFF members.

'€œIn 2013 the Erau festival was attended by representatives from eight CIOFF countries, namely France, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Egypt, Greece, Belgium and Czech Republic,'€ said Sri.

Sri said the festival was an opportunity for the countries to exchange experiences in arts performance.

The festival will also function as a way to introduce Tenggarong and the culture of Kutai Kartanegara sultanate to the public both domestically and overseas, she added. (yln)
