Indonesiaâs young chess star Medina Warda Aulia eked out a hard-fought win over Hungaryâs Ticia Gara in the sixth round on Friday to end their Japfa Chess Festival match in a 3-3 draw
Indonesia's young chess star Medina Warda Aulia eked out a hard-fought win over Hungary's Ticia Gara in the sixth round on Friday to end their Japfa Chess Festival match in a 3-3 draw.
The match, according to Medina, unfolded in a similar fashion to their fourth round encounter, in which Medina failed to hold up against Gara's French game.
'I was prepared for this [sixth round] game,' Medina told The Jakarta Post after the match.
Speaking about her tactics, she said she knew how to employ her rooks to open an attack on her opponent.
'It seemed she did not expect my move,' she said.
In the middle game, Medina sacrificed a rook with a knight in the knowledge that Gara had her king exposed to the attack. The defining moment came when Gara had no option but to surrender her queen, which led to her defeat.
'She gave up her queen, or else her king would have been checkmated,' Medina said.
The positive result could boost Medina's confidence ahead of her participation in the Chess Olympiad in Norway in August, for which the Indonesian Chess Association (Percasi) has listed five men and five women players.
Medina's fellow teammates Chelsie Monica Sihite and Dewi Citra, who competed in the Open category, also registered positive results.
Chelsie lost only once and drew twice to finish in seventh place with 7 points among 240 participants, while Dewi was ranked 47th with 6 points.
Anjas Novita topped the standings with Susanto Megaranto and Kasmiran, in second and third respectively.
The Japfa Chess Festival, which featured 14 match categories including the grandmaster tournament, ended on Friday.
In the grandmaster tournament, which listed five foreign and five local players, the top three positions went to the visitors with grandmaster (GM) Sergei Tiviakov of the Netherlands topping the standings with 7.5 points.
IM Nguyen Huyn Minh Huy of Vietnam was in second with 6.5 points and GM Suat Atalik of Turkey had to settle for third with 6 points.
