"I officially give Jokowi permission to campaign for his presidential bid. I will issue a written permit tomorrow and Jokowi could take leave from his role as governor from tomorrow until the General Elections Commission [KPU] confirms the results of the election,' Yudhoyono said as quoted by Antara news agency on Tuesday.
Law No. 42/2008 on the
presidential elections stipulates that a regional head who has been nominated
as a presidential candidate does not have to resign from their post, but must
ask for leave.
Jokowi, the presidential candidate for the Indonesian Democratic Party of
Struggle (PDI-P), said that from tomorrow Jakarta deputy governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama would take up his
responsibilities. (fss)
