Anggito asks to step down over haj graft case

T

he Religious Affairs Ministry's director-general for hajand umrah (minor pilgrimage) Anggito Abimanyu asked to be relieved of hisposition on Friday, in order to allow himto focus on the investigation into alleged graft in the organization of the hajto Saudi Arabia in 2012-2013.

People's Welfare Coordinating Minister Agung Laksono, who is also acting religious minister, confirmed that Anggito had submitted his resignation to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and the Religious Affairs Ministry's secretary general, Nur Syam, kompas.com reported on Friday.

"We just got a report from the secretary general that he, Anggito, submitted a resignation letter at 11 a.m., declaring that he was resigning as of today," Agung said at the Cipanas Presidential Palace in Cianjur regency, West Java.

Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) investigators had seized Anggito'€™s laptop and cell phone as evidence in the graft case. To this date, Anggito'€™s legal status is still that of witness.

Anggito'€™s decision follows former religious affairs minister Suryadharma Ali's resignation on May 26 after the KPK named him as a suspect in the haj-management graft case on May 22.

KPK investigators have accused Suryadharma, who is also chairman of the United Development Party (PPP), of abusing his power by allegedly flying dozens of people, reportedly relatives, friends, fellow officials, lawmakers and staff members, to join him on a haj pilgrimage using state funds.(fss/dic)
