nly 318 out of 1,449 listed sex workers have picked up the compensation offered by the government after the closure of Surabaya'€™s Dolly, which was one of the biggest red-light districts in Southeast Asia, on June 18.

Surabaya Social Affairs Agency social rehabilitation department head Dedy Sosialisto, said that 63 of the 311 listed pimps had picked up their compensation as of Monday, as reported by kompas.com.

Due to this, the agency said that they were extending the deadline from June 23 to June 26.

Dedy said that he hoped that more people would collect their compensation because the money would be returned to the government if not claimed.

Dedy also acknowledged that he did not know what would happen after the June 26 deadline.

"We have yet to receive any instructions," he said.

The Social Affairs Ministry allocated Rp 8 billion (US$666,944) to cover compensation pay outs, each sex worker will be given roughly Rp 5 million and pimps will receive Rp 5 million.

On June 18, Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini, East Java Governor Soekarwo and Social Affairs Minister Salim Segaf Al Jufri witnessed the official closure of the red-light district.

Dolly was home to 1,449 sex workers, 311 pimps and around 300 brothels. Some 400 residents also earn a living running various businesses. (fss)
