T

he Medan city administration hasannounced the temporary halt of all nightlife activities during the fastingmonth of Ramadhan, which is likely to run from June 28 to July 29.

'€œMayor Dzulmi Eldin has instructed that all nightlife activities be temporarily closed down from one day before Ramadhan until two days after Idul Fitri. We will harshly discipline any venue that disobeys the order,'€ Busral Manan, Medan Tourism and Culture Agency head, said on Wednesday.

According to Busral, the instruction letter says entertainment venues, which encompasses discos, nightclubs, arcade game centers, karaoke halls, live music performances, bars and pubs, spas and massage parlors, must remain closed during the holy fasting month.

The instruction says they must also close for Christmas on Dec. 25.

The administration has also recommended all restaurants and food stalls refrain from displaying their food during the day during Ramadhan.

However, Daulat, a hotel and entertainment venue owner in Medan, said he had yet to receive the instruction letter from the city administration, even though he closed his businesses anyway during Ramadhan to respect Muslims.

'€œHonestly, our income usually decreases more than 50 percent due to being closed during Ramadhan. However, we don'€™t have any problem with that, because our losses will be covered again after Idul Fitri,'€ he told The Jakarta Post. (gda/dic)
