he founder of the controversial tabloid Obor Rakyat, Setiyardi Budiono, as well as its editor, Darmawan Sepriyossa, have been named suspects in the publishing of an illegitimate journalistic product, a National Police spokesperson said.

'€œSB [Setiyardi] and DS [Darmawan] are accused of violating Article 9(2) and 18(3) of the 1999 Press Law,'€ Insp. Gen. Ronny F. Sompie said on Friday.

The articles stipulate that any press company must acquire legal status, with offending parties subject to a maximum penalty of Rp 100 million (US$8,426) in fines.

The case was first reported by the campaign team of presidential candidate Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo, who accused the two men of publishing hate speech and defamation against the candidate. The article in question falsely reported that Jokowi was a Christian of Chinese descent.

In the case investigation, the police have questioned language experts and officials from the Press Council who determined Obor Rakyat to be an illegitimate journalism product.

Separately, the National Police'€™s general crime investigations director, Brig. Gen. Herry Prastowo, said on Friday that the police had not yet found sufficient evidence to charge the two suspects with defamation, as stipulated in in Article 310 and 311 of the Criminal Code (KUHP).
