ollowers of the An-Nadzir Islamic group in Gowa regency, South Sulawesi, celebrated Idul Fitri on Sunday, earlier than the date set by the government.
Wearing black robes, An-Nadzir followers packed into a field in the middle of a palm plantation to perform Idul Fitri prayers from early in the morning. All An-Nadzir female followers were seen wearing veils.
"We started fasting earlier than the official announcement of the government. So, we celebrated Idul Fitri today," Lukman A. Bakti, an Islamic teacher who led the prayer, said as quoted by tribunnews.com on Sunday.
Lukman, also the group leader, said the early Ramadhan and Idul Fitri celebrations were based on mathematical calculations, tidal water observations and moon sightings.
The government is scheduled to hold an isbat (confirmation) meeting on Sunday evening, to announce Idul Fitri.
"We are grateful that the government and other Muslims allow us the freely practice our tradition," an anonymous follower said.
