undreds of followers of the Naqsabandiyah Al Kholidiyah Muslim group in Deli Serdang regency, North Sumatra, performed Idul Fitri prayers on Sunday.
Naqsabandiyah members celebrated Idul Fitri one day earlier than that set nationally by the government. They performed Idul Fitri prayers at 8 a.m. local time at a Naqsabandiyah suluk or house of worship on Jl. Kongsi in Marendal, Deli Serdang.
Syekh Muda Muhammad Nur Zikri, one of Naqsabandiyah Al Kholidiyah's followers, said the group had determined the date for Idul Fitri based on the start of Ramadhan, which is decided on the Qomariyah lunar calendar.
He said Naqsabandiyah followers had begun Ramadhan on June 27, one day earlier than the government's designation.
'Based on our calculations, we had completed the 30 days of fasting, so we have celebrated Idul Fitri today,' Nur Fikri said on Sunday.
The Religious Affairs Ministry is set to hold an isbat meeting to determine the date for Idul Fitri on Sunday evening, but experts from both Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah have announced that Idul Fitri will most likely fall on Monday. (ebf)
