tate-owned shipping firm PT Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia (Pelni) has transported 5,000 motorcyclists from Jakarta to Semarang for free to reduce traffic accidents during the Idul Fitri holiday.
'This is the second year that we have been assigned to transporting travelers,' Pelni president director Sulistyo Wimbo Hardjito said as quoted by Antara news agency.
He was speaking to journalists on board passenger vessel KM Ciremai on its way to Semarang from Jakarta on Sunday.
Wimbo said Pelni was assigned by the Transportation Ministry to carry travelers in this year's holiday season. He said the company had transported the first batch of travelers on Thursday and the second batch on Saturday.
Pelni is set to ferry travelers back from Semarang to Jakarta in two batches, on Aug.2 and Aug.4.
In total, Pelni is predicted to carry 10,000 passengers and 5,000 motorcycles to and from their hometown in Idul Fitri this year.
To ensure the safety and pleasure of passengers, Wimbo said, KM Ciremai has been modified as a '3-in-1' vessel, able to carry passengers, goods and vehicles. (ebf)
