T

he Jakarta Police intend to extend thedetention of two Jakarta International School (JIS) teachers, who havebeen accused of involvement in the sexual assault of three kindergarten pupils,by forty days.

"The detention of the two JIS suspects will expire on Saturday. That's why the prosecutors will extend it for 40 more days," Jakarta Police Criminal Investigations Directorate chief Sr. Comr. Heru Pranoto said on Friday as quoted by tribunnews.com.

Heru explained that they were extending Neil Bantleman and Ferdinant Tijong's detention because they were still needed in the investigation.

The case first came to light when police arrested six outsourced cleaners, one of whom died while in police custody, for allegedly raping a 6-year-old boy in a JIS toilet.

The suspects have been detained since July 14, after the parents of two other kindergarten students filed police reports against JIS teachers, claiming that their sons had been sexually assaulted by Bantleman, Ferdinant, and the principal of JIS kindergarten and elementary schools, Elsa Donohue, who is currently considered a witness in the case. The first alleged victim also implicated the teaching staff.

The mother of the first victim has demanded that JIS and the ministry pay US$125 million in compensation, comprising $25 million in material losses and $100 million in non-material losses. (fss)
