ational Monument (Monas) management unit head Rini Hariyanisaid she had received a report that a security officer might have backed thestreet vendors who wanted to stay at Monas, despite the administration'€™sprohibition.

She said the tip originated from the vendors themselves.

'€œThey [the street vendors] are brave to come back and resume their business here [at Monas]. When I asked their reason, they said that they had permits from a security officer,'€ she said on Wednesday, as quoted by tempo.co.

However, Rini refused to elaborate further regarding the officer'€™s identity.

During the Idul Fitri holiday last week, the Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) conducted raids in many popular areas, including Monas.

Indonesian Street Vendor Association (APKLI) head Hoiza Siregar previously criticized the Jakarta administration'€™s decision to evict street vendors because they did not provide any alternatives for them.

Hoiza added that the evictions would not solve any problems. '€œAfter a while the vendors might still return to the streets,'€ she said. (alz)
