ive people died when a fire raged through twoshop-houses in Pasar Sentral Market in Bulukumba regency, South Sulawesi, earlyMonday.
The five victims were identified as store owner Ike, 20, his two siblings, Wandi, 15, Alam, 9, and shopkeepers Asrori and Lia.
Residents first learned about the incident after an employee at the garment store, Rendi, escaped the two-story building by jumping out of a window. Three others escaped with Rendi. The four are currently undergoing treatment at the Bulukumba regional hospital.
Rendi said he had been asleep and woke up to find the second floor full of smoke. He then tried to wake up the others but could only wake up three of them. The other five had locked their rooms before going to bed and remained asleep.
Bulukumba Police general crimes and intelligence director Adj. Comr. Jamal Faturrahmat said on Monday that the cause of the fire had yet to be determined.
'We are still waiting for the forensics lab team from the South Sulawesi Police headquarters to investigate the scene,' he said.
He said it was difficult to put out the fire because the shop-houses contained flammable materials. The fire, he said, lasted five hours. The victims' bodies were removed from the premises in the afternoon.
