State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi announced the decision at the Presidential Palace on Monday adding that the President appointed Deputy Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Didit Herdiawan Ashaf as head of the new agency.
Prasetyo said that the Authority for the Management of the Northern Coast Of Java would be in charge of designing, constructing and managing the planned giant sea wall.
The minister said that the setting up of a new agency was part of the government's commitment to handle land subsidence and coastal erosion along the coast of Java.
"This is a long overdue. The plan has been in place since the 1990s, especially regarding the construction of this giant sea wall," Prasetyo was quoted by Antara on Monday.
In leading the new agency, Didit will have two deputies, Darwin Trisna Djajawinata and Suhajar Diantoro. Darwin is formerly an official with the state asset fund Danantara while Suhajar is former secretary general of the Home Affairs Ministry.
President Prabowo has been promoting the construction of the giant seawall since he became defense minister under the administration of his predecessor, Joko "Jokowi" Widodo.
Prabowo has suggested the project could cost up to $US60 billion. According to estimates from environmental watchdogs and researchers, the giant seawall megaproject would result in some Rp 207 billion ($13.3 million) in economic losses in the fisheries sector each year through the disruption of crucial marine ecosystems.
