OGYKARTA: The Gerindra Party has officially named Aryo Winoto, a nephew of the late president Soeharto, as its candidate for the office of Bantul regent.
'All party elements support Aryo's candidacy. Today we are officially naming him our candidate,' the head of Gerindra's Bantul branch, Purwanto, said on Thursday.
Purwanto also revealed that the party was still discussing possible candidates for the post of deputy regent. The Red-and-White Coalition, he said, had agreed that Gerindra would have the right to choose the regency candidate.
The Golkar Party will name a candidate for the Kulonprogo regency, while the National Mandate Party (PAN) has the privilege of selecting a candidate for the Gunungkidul regency.
Aryo said he was grateful and promised to do his best in the election.
'I am grateful for this, and promise to try my hardest to win,' Aryo said.
Aryo is the son of the late Noto Suwito, the fifth sibling of Soeharto. Noto, who was head of Kemusuk subdistrict in Bantul, was Bantul's pre-eminent figure during his brother's 32-year tenure. Prospective officials had to win his approval before they could run for office.
Aryo will run against the incumbent regent, Sri Surya Widati, and police official Sr. Comr. Priharsono for the position, in direct elections slated to take place next year.
