Girl missing after birthday swimming accident

F

ifth-grader Dian P., 11-year-old, was swept away Monday by swift currents in the Kampar River, in Kampar regency, Riau, during a birthday party.

Head of the emergency section of the Kampar Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Muhammad Nasir, said the incident took place at around 4:30 p.m. local time.

At that time, Dian and nine friends, all from Tanjung Berulak in Kampar district, were holding a birthday party for one of their number '€” 10-year-old Dewi '€” alongside the river in Tanjung Berulak'€™s Dusun II area.

Some of the girls decided to go for a swim in the river, including Dian, even though she was unable to swim.

Just minutes later, the girls became hysterical as Dian was swept away by the river'€™s current. A number of locals who heard their screams immediately jumped into the river to try and rescue Dian, but to no avail.

A search for Dian, involving a local search and rescue team, the BPBD, police officers and local residents was still ongoing as of Tuesday afternoon.
