Roy visits Andi in prison

F

ormer youth and sports minister Roy Suryo visited Thursday his predecessor, Andi Alfian Mallarangeng, who is locked up at the Corruption Eradication Commission'€™s (KPK) detention center for graft.

Roy said he could visit Andi now that he was no longer a public official.

'€œI'€™ve been wanting to visit him for so long. Now that I have retired, there is nothing that could be construed as a conflict of interest,'€ Roy told reporters.

The Jakarta Corruption Court sentenced Andi to four years'€™ imprisonment for his role in the graft case surrounding the construction of a sports complex in Hambalang, West Java.

Andi was convicted of accepting Rp 4 billion and US$550,000 from a company called Global Daya Manunggal via his brother, Andi '€œChoel'€ Zulkarnaen Mallarangeng.

Andi allegedly used the money to fund his bid for the Democratic Party chairmanship during a national congress in Bandung, West Java, in 2010.

He lost the bid to Anas Urbaningrum, who is also now in prison for graft.
