n earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale struck Friday morning at 10:21 a.m. in Semeulue regency in western Aceh, but authorities say there is no tsunami threat, Antara news agency reports.
Yuharman, head of the Lampung branch of the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said Friday there was no threat of tsunami, as the epicenter of the earthquake was located at a depth of 10 kilometers (km) off the west coast of northern Sumatra, some 308 km southwest of Semeulue and 404 km southeast of provincial capital Banca Aceh.
Fears of tsunami still haunt Aceh following the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami that swept through coastal areas of the province, killing tens of thousands. (rms)(+++)
