Yogyakarta launches batik encyclopedia

he Yogyakarta Industry and Trade Agency launched an encyclopedia of Yogyakartan batik on Saturday in order to better inform people about the richness of the area's batik culture.
'This encyclopedia contains information you need to know about Yogyakartan batik. The information and data are based on research carried out by academics at Gadjah Mada University,' the agency's head of small and medium enterprises Tri Karyadi Riyanto said on Saturday as quoted by Antara news agency.
He revealed that the academics had spent around two years researching batik before compiling the book.
In addition, the encyclopedia contains the philosophy behind every motif of Yogyakartan batik as well as information on how craftspeople use ingredients from nature to color their batik.
'The recognition of Yogyakarta as a batik city is behind the launch of this book,' he continued.
The city was named batik city by the World Craft Council (WWC) last year, as it is the center of batik-crafting in the country.
Copies of the encyclopedia have been distributed to every junior high school, senior high school and vocational school in Yogyakarta. (nfo)(+++)
