The cargo train is relaunched to cut the dwelling time of containers from the current five days.

State port operator PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo) III reactivated on Thursday a container train service at Tanjung Perak Port in Surabaya, East Java, to cut down on dwelling time, currently five days.

Pelindo III president director Djarwo Surjanto said one factor causing long waiting times for international containers was the limited transportation available.

Currently, goods owners and forwarders are still relying on trucks to take the containers out of the port, he added.

"Traffic jams and a limited number of trucks are among the things that cause the containers to not be taken out from the port quickly," he said in a press statement.

"Although there may already be clearances from the Customs and Excise Office, as long as there is no transportation, the goods will sit in the port."

Djarwo was speaking at the sidelines of a ceremony for reactivating the cargo train service.

He said currently container traffic at Tanjung Perak Port had reached 3.1 million twenty-feet equivalent units (TEUs) with 1.2 million TEUs taken up by international containers. It is expected that the figure would grow by 10 percent this year.

Pelindo III spokesman Edi Priyanto said a cargo train had existed since 1994 before it ceased operation in 2004. The reactivated cargo train would serve the Surabaya-Jakarta route with a twice daily service, he added.

"The train operator is PT Kereta Api Logistik in cooperation with Pelindo III's subsidiary, PT Terminal Petikemas Surabaya," he said.

PT Kereta Api Logistik is a subsidiary of state railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia.

The train will be equipped with 15 to 30 cars able to carry 40-foot containers. The annual capacity is estimated at 43,800 TEUs.

Edi said that during the first stage, the priority would be given to reefer containers carrying agriculture products. (nvn)(+++)
