he Medan Corruption Court sentenced on Tuesday suspended Toba Samosir Regent Pandapotan Kasmin Simanjuntak to 18 months in prison for graft and money laundering related to land appropriation for the development of the Asahan power plant.
The court also fined Pandapotan Rp 250 million (US$19,230) or ordered him to spend an extra six months in jail and obligated him to repay Rp 3.8 billion in state losses.
The verdict was more lenient than prosecutors' demand of three years in prison.
One of the three judges, Ahmad Drajat, gave a dissenting opinion, saying that Pandapotan deserved to be imprisoned for seven years and fined Rp 500 million as he had been proved guilty without a reasonable doubt of violating the Corruption Law.
