'€˜Ojek'€™ a misguided solution, says expert

A

transportation expert has expressed concern over the growing number of ojek (motorcycle taxis) services using smartphone applications, claiming that if the trend continues, in the long run it will impact negatively on the city by increasing traffic, air pollution and energy consumption.

'€œIt is a misguided solution to transportation,'€ said Djoko Setijowarno of the Indonesian Transportation Society (MTI) as quoted by tribunnews.com on Wednesday.

He said that the growing number of ojek service companies, such as Go-jek, GrabBike and Ojek-sharia, will certainly increase the number of motorcycles in urban areas like Jakarta, which will increase the burden on the city roads.

He said that ojek would not be needed if local governments could develop better public transportation services as has happened in Shanghai, China.

He explained that the Shanghai city administration has provided convenient ojek terminals but the people there prefer to use other public transportation.

'€œIf mayors and regents are serious about developing public transportation, soon, less people will rely on ojek'€, Djoko added.

He said that bajaj (three-wheeled taxis) with gas as their fuel are a much better transportation solution than ojek. '€œ[Bajaj] are not only environmentally friendly, but customers also get better service,'€ he added.

The increasing demand for ojek in Jakarta is not only due to their fares being lower than taxis'€™, but because ojek are more reliable, particularly during peak-hour traffic congestion in the morning and evenings. (BBN)(++++)
