In an effort to improve security at sea,  the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry has strengthened its vessel monitoring system (VMS) by installing more monitoring devices in ships measuring 30 gross tonnage (GT) and larger.

According to the ministry'€™s director general of maritime and fisheries monitoring task force, Asep Burhanudin, there are currently 3,277 ships measuring more than 30 GT, 2,864 of which have been equipped with VMS transmitters.

Based on the monitoring, Asep said, his office had issued sanction recommendations to the ministry: 54 ships were recommended administrative sanctions, while it was recommended that the ministry freeze the operating licenses of 71 ships.

Meanwhile, the ministry'€™s director general of monitoring and management, Tyas Budiman, said that directorate general of maritime and fisheries monitoring task force was integrating a VMS, automatic identification system (AIS), Inc. data and SAT radar.

'€œThere will be an AIS receiver in the monitoring ship that can supervise the ship. With the mechanism the monitoring data will be more accurate,'€ Tyas said recently.

Tyas said that the directorate general of maritime and fisheries monitoring task force would will also increase facilities with four 60 meter-long monitoring ships.

According to the ministry, the compliance rate of fisheries businesspeople was high at 94 percent for fishery ships in 2015, with 20,159 ships out of 21,120 ships deemed compliant. The fish cultivation business compliance rate was 99.7 percent, with 106 units out of 107 considered compliant. Meanwhile, the processing, marketing and logistic business compliance rate was 82.61 percent, with 518 units out of 627 considered compliant. (bbn)(+)
