Rianti Cartwright: “I find ignorance really boring”

Words Bruce Emond Illustration Mufty Fairuz

Although Rianti Cartwright recently wrapped shooting a movie, Bulan Terbelah di Langit Amerika (Divided Moon in the American Sky), in Jakarta and New York City, and also completed a soap adapted from a Turkish series, there are a lot of other activities on her plate. They include running a bakery, a spa and helping her husband, the singer Cas Nainggolan, with his new restaurant in Kemang, South Jakarta. She tries to keep everything in perspective. “Actually, I am quite relaxed and joyful, but we’ll see how I feel later today,” said the University of Tasmania graduate, probably best known for playing one of the leads in the box-office smash Ayat-Ayat Cinta (Love Verses) in 2007 as well her stint as a VJ. Here she reveals her other side, from her choice of superhero powers to the roles she would love to play in life and on film.

I am, in three words …

Optimistic, silly, disciplined.

My best trait …

Tolerant.

And my worst …

That’s hard. Anxious I guess.

I am proudest of …

My relationships — my marriage, friendships and family.

My bad habit …

Overbooking and overpromising, committing to too many things. I don’t know how to say no.

I would never …

Jump out of a plane.

I am bored by …

Ignorance. That’s really boring.

I laugh at …

When things don’t go as planned, I try to see the humor in it.

I cannot stand …

Narrow-minded people.

I still need to …

Get more organized.

The superpower I wish I had …

To disappear sometimes or to fly.

My biggest fear …

Losing those closest to me.

The role I would love to play …

In life, to be a mother. In entertainment, maybe a historical character, like a Dutch colonial lady.

My biggest regret …

I have none. I have had challenges but they made me who I am. Oh, maybe that big piece of cake that I ate last night at my husband’s birthday dinner.

On my travel bucket list …

I love travelling. Iceland and Norway are places I would like to visit.

A great weekend for me …

It’s just staying at home with my husband, watching movies and eating a lot.

Don’t ever call me …

Lazy.

When the going gets tough, I …

The first thing that comes to mind is that the tough get going! I hopefully rise to the occasion and do not panic.

My life motto …

A journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step.

Two people I would love to have dinner with …

Oprah Winfrey, because I’m a big fan of her. And also my paternal grandfather, because he passed before I was born. He was a carpenter and a painter from Wales; I have some of his paintings.

My dream for the future …

To have children.
