P

resident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has officially declared the planned Patimban deep-sea port in West Java to be a national strategic project.

The decision was cemented with the issuance on May 25 of Presidential Decree No. 47/2016 on the port, which was seen to have vital value for West Java to fulfill its demand for port services. Previous national strategic projects were initially listed in Presidential Degulation No. 3/2016.

"It has indeed become a national strategic project," Transportation Ministry director general for sea transportation Antonius Tonny Budiono told The Jakarta Post on Monday.

Its status as a national strategic project will be reflected in the planning, development, operation, technical aspects and management of the port. Related agencies and ministries are obligated to facilitate and expedite the construction process.

For the future operation of the port, the Transportation Ministry can cooperate with a port company appointed through a tendering process. The ministry is currently in discussion with Japan to fund the construction of the US$3.08 billion project through a soft loan. The presidential regulation was also cited as a requirement from the Japanese government before it will disburse the loan.
