n Algerian has been arrested for allegedly stealing a credit card in a bar in Kuta, Bali. Hacane Hanifi, 46, was nabbed on Aug.7 following a report from the management of a nightclub in Kuta that he had used a credit card belonging to someone else.

Kuta Police general crimes chief detective First Insp.Ario Seno Wimoko said Hanifi was vacationing in Bali when he committed the crime.

The incident began at the Eikon Bar in Legian on the evening of Aug.7. A guest, Rosalinda Octaviani, 22, reported to the bar’s security personnel that her wallet had gone missing from her handbag. She then asked the bar management to see the CCTV footage.

"From the CCTV footage, it was learned that her wallet had been stolen by a foreigner," Ario said on Tuesday.

Several minutes later, Rosalinda received a text message advising that her credit card had been used at the Sky Garden, a nearby nightclub. It was stated in the notification that a bill of more than Rp 2 million (US$152.44) had been charged to her credit card.

Rosalinda hurried to Sky the Garden to find out who had used her credit card. The club’s cashier told her the credit card had been used by two foreigners.

A man identified to have used her credit card approached the cashier while Rosalinda was still there and she immediately reported him to the police.

The police arrested Hanifi at the bar. "If found guilty, he could face a maximum sentence of five years in prison," Ario said. (ebf)
