eneral Electric (GE) Oil & Gas has won a contract from British oil giant BP to build the third natural gas liquefaction facility in the Tangguh liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in West Papua.
The US-based company had previously won the first and the second tender from BP for an identical facility in the Tangguh project. GE invited its associate company, Imeco Inter Sarana, in the current project.
GE Oil & Gas CEO and president for its turbo machinery division Rod Christie said the Tangguh Train 3 plant was set to supply 3.8 million tons per annum (mtpa) of LNG, bringing the total supply of Tangguh LNG to 11.4 mtpa.
"Indonesia is one of the leading LNG suppliers in Asia and also one of the fastest growing economies in the world," he said in a press statement as quoted by kompas.com in Jakarta on Tuesday.
GE will supply the liquefaction components from its plant in Greenville, South Carolina, build as well as test them in its facility in Florence, Italy, before finally delivering the components to Indonesia planned for mid-2018.
In Indonesia, Ron further said, GE Oil & Gas would employ local manpower and hold training programs to develop their capacity. Most of the gas produced by the third train in the Tangguh project would also be allocated to supply the Indonesian market, despite rising energy consumption in the world by 3.9 percent, last year.
