he Tangguh Train 3 LNG facility in West Papua has shipped its first cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG), the Upstream Oil and Gas Special Regulatory Task Force (SKK Migas) said on Thursday.

The facility is operated by BP through BP Berau on behalf of the other production-sharing contract partners as a contractor to SKK Migas.

The third train is expected to increase Tangguh’s capacity by 3.8 million tonnes a year to 11.4 million tonnes, BP said in a statement published Thursday.

The British oil giant added that the first cargo from Train 3 was heading to state-owned electricity utility PLN’s regasification facility in Arun, Aceh.

SKK Migas head Dwi Soetjipto said that with the expanding production capacity, the Tangguh facility would play a vital role in helping Indonesia meet its growing energy demand.

“Total gas production at Tangguh is expected to account for over a third of national gas production,” he said in a statement issued on Thursday. “Tangguh is the largest LNG producer in Indonesia and the production from Tangguh's three-train operation will significantly contribute to the national gas production target of 12 billion standard cubic feet per day [of gas] by 2030.”
