Hutama Karya has been tasked with building a 50 km road section connecting Mamberamo and Elelim in the Papua Highlands, which it said would be funded through a public-private partnership scheme.
he Public Works and Housing Ministry has appointed state-owned construction firm Hutama Karya to build a 50-kilometer road between the regencies of Mamberamo and Elelim in Papua Highlands province.
The road is part of the stretch connecting Jayapura in Papua province and Wamena in the Papua Highlands along the Trans-Papua Highway, which aims to connect major cities in the country’s easternmost region.
Hutama Karya spokesperson Adjib Al Hakim said the company would meet the project’s estimated investment cost of around Rp 3.3 trillion (US$203 million) through a public-private partnership (PPP) scheme.
“The project will be a huge step in the government's effort to build infrastructure in Papua, and it will bring significant economic growth to the region,” Adjib said in a statement released on Thursday.
Hutama Karya and its subsidiary Hutama Karya Infrastruktur plans to establish a joint venture to manage the project during the 15-year concession period, which includes two years for building the road.
Aside from the Trans-Papua’s Mamberamo-Elelim road section, the government appointed Hutama Karya in 2014 to build the Trans-Sumatra Toll Road, a network of 24 roads spanning 2,700 kilometers that is to connect Banda Aceh in Aceh and Bakauheni in Lampung.
