mid religious sentiment being exploited in Jakarta election campaigns, governor candidate Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono on Wednesday visited the Avalokitesvara temple, promising the Buddhist community to fight for protecting pluralism in the capital.
"I have been in the military for 16 years. My blood and soul are always those of a soldier who safeguards the unity of Indonesia," Agus, a son of former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s, told the congregation at the temple.
During the visit to the temple in Mangga Dua, Central Jakarta, he was accompanied by his running mate, Sylviana Murni, the former mayor of Central Jakarta.
Agus promised to respect diversity in the city, although Sylvi and he are both Muslims. He added that plurality should become a factor to strengthen the state's unity, not a factor of disintegration.
Suhu Duta Wira of the vihara welcomed Agus and Sylvi, adding that members of the congregation were ready to become friends with Agus and Sylvi.
Agus also stressed the importance of maintaining security for all members of society, including minorities.
“Security will become our priority. Security won't only be determined by the number of police and military personnel, but when all residents feel that they are treated fairly by the Jakarta administration," Agus said. (bbn)
