he government is forming a management body to carry out seawall projects to tackle land subsidence along the northern coast of Java, Deputy Public Works Minister Diana Kusumastuti has said.

Diana said President Prabowo Subianto had instructed Coordinating Infrastructure and Regional Development Minister Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono to form the authority by involving several ministries and other stakeholders.

“Therefore, it’s not only the Public Works Ministry [that will carry out the project]; several ministries and stakeholders will work together to complete the giant sea wall,” Diana said on Tuesday, as reported by DetikFinance, using the term giant sea wall to collectively refer to separate projects.

She emphasized that the giant sea wall, spanning from Tangerang in Banten to Gresik in East Java, required a management body given the massive scale of the infrastructure undertaking.

The body would operate under the Office of the Coordinating Infrastructure and Regional Development Minister, she added.

Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo previously reiterated the ministry’s commitment to continuing the giant seawall project as part of the effort to prevent land subsidence and minimize flood risks in Greater Jakarta.
