ubernatorial candidate Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono was urged by a resident on Wednesday not to carry out arbitrary evictions if he was elected, as such actions caused misery to residents.

Topan, a resident of the Mangga Dua subdistrict, told Agus, who was accompanied by his running mate, Sylviana Murni, during the visit, that evicted residents did not know what to do after losing their property.

"We hope you won't evict residents arbitrarily because this leaves us not knowing what to do," Topan said, adding that the residents in the area had a problem with clean water.

He said city-owned tap water operator Pam Jaya and its business partner had not installed a pipeline to supply water to the area.

In response to the call from the resident, Agus promised to manage the city more humanely and would give protection to all people. "We will build a better, fairer and more secure city with a humanistic approach," Agus told the residents.

Meanwhile, Agus and Sylvi were warmly welcomed by residents with a lot of housewives and children asking to take photos and shake hands with the pair.

Early in the morning, Agus and Sylvi visited a Buddhist temple in the nearby area, promising devotees that his administration would defend pluralism in the city and protect the interests of minorities. (bbn)
