he Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) Ministry said on Thursday that it would facilitate the warteg (an abbreviation for warung Tegal, a stall serving traditional food from Tegal in Central Java) cooperative, Kowarteg, in opening warteg in Malaysia next year.
Describing his recent meeting with the Kowarteg’s chairman Sastoro, Cooperatives and SMEs Minister Anak Agung Gede Ngurah Puspayoga said the potential for opening warteg in Malaysia was huge because many Indonesians lived there.
“With strong branding, and also [the fact that] many Indonesian people live in Malaysia, I believe that ‘warteg’ can be successful there,” he told reporters at a press conference in Jakarta.
The ministry will facilitate access for the cooperative to open businesses in the neighboring country, such as searching for the right locations, he said.
He said since Kowarteg already had its own legal entity as a cooperative, it would be easier in the future to handle any kind of problems, especially related to business permits.
Last week, Sastoro said that besides opening warteg branches in Malaysia, Kowarteg, which has about 20,000 members, also planned to open more branches in Hong Kong and Australia.
“In Malaysia, we will open in Kuala Lumpur, Johor and Penang. We have also done surveys in Hong Kong and Melbourne,” he said, as quoted by Kompas. (evi)
