epok administration in West Java may be sued by victims of traffic accidents for neglecting to repair damaged roads that have triggered a high number of traffic incidents in the city, a police officer has said.

“Because this [the road] public facility has threatened [the safety] of drivers and public in general, the Depok administration as the responsible party can be taken to court,” Depok Police traffic directorate division head Comr. Sutomo said on Tuesday as quoted by tribunnews.com.

The division, he said, had recorded 240 traffic accidents caused by damaged roads in February, adding that most of the victims were motorcycle drivers and passengers.

He said he had sent a formal request to the city’s public works and spatial planning agency, which oversees roads, to immediately repair damaged roads. However, he had yet to receive a response, he added.

“On average, eight traffic accidents occur per day due to damaged roads and that’s a high number. It is difficult for us to prevent such circumstances if the Depok administration doesn’t take quick action to repair the roads,” he said.\

Among damaged roads that need serious attention are Jl. Juanda, Jl. Margonda, Jl. Gas Alam, Jl. Sawangan, Jl. Cinere Raya, Jl. Limo and Jl. Setu Baru, Sutomo said. (fac)
