The body of a 60-year-old man was evacuated from a trail on Mount Agung in Karangasem, Bali, after it was found on Tuesday.
I Wayan Suwena, head of operations at Bali’s national search and rescue agency (Basarnas Bali), said the body had been taken to Karangasem Hospital
“We just completed the evacuation process this morning at around 7 a.m. [WITA],” Suwena said on Thursday.
The man, identified as Alexander Bimo Haryotedjo, from Semarang, Central Java, was found dead in an area located 2,833 meters above sea level.
Mount Agung, the highest mountain in Bali, is an active volcano with a summit elevation of 3,142 m above sea level.
Officials said the circumstances of his death were still unknown, with no information of when the victim started the climb. The victim is thought to have climbed alone without a local guide.
“The victim’s body was found by another climber, who is a foreigner, and a local guide on Tuesday afternoon,” Basarnas Bali head I Nyoman Sidakarya said.
Evacuation efforts were hampered by bad weather, which made it difficult for search workers to reach the body’s location.
In 2022, United States citizen Kevin Henderson died on Mount Agung after falling on a climb to celebrate his birthday. Authorities reported the victim fell on his way down on a sunrise trek at an altitude of 2,700 m above sea level. (dre)
