anura Party politician and former lawmaker Miryam S Haryani, who has been named a perjury suspect by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), demanded on Monday that the South Jakarta District Court revoke her suspect status.
She argued that the anti-graft body had no authority naming her a perjury suspect in relation to an e-ID bribery case and has filed a pretrial motion to challenge the decision.
"With regards to the KPK's duties and authorities as stipulated by Article 6 of Law No. 30/2002 [on the KPK], it is clear that the KPK is only authorized [to investigate and name a suspect] in a corruption case. While [perjury], which is used to charge the plaintiff, is clearly another type of crime," Heru Andeska, one of Miryam's lawyers, said in the case’s first hearing.

The KPK has named Miryam a perjury suspect after she suddenly retracted her affidavit in a hearing in March. In the affidavit, she said that several lawmakers had benefitted from the e-ID project and she had distributed the money.
However, testifying under oath, Miryam then claimed in the hearing that she made the statement because she had been threatened by KPK investigators. (wit)
