one-way traffic trial applied on a number of streets in Depok, West Java, is likely to be made a permanent solution to traffic congestion in the city.
"We are thinking of continuing the system. However, we will discuss any suggestions comprehensively. We will take into account what its strengths and weaknesses are,” said Depok Transportation Agency head Gandara Budiana as quoted by kompas.com on Wednesday.
Authorities will also consider input from parties that oppose the system, he added after receiving representatives of Depok residents and street vendors, who held a rally against the policy on Wednesday.
Gandara further said the plan to make the system permanent would not be executed unless a solution was found for those opposed to the policy.
The one-way system was introduced as a trial one month ago on Jl. Dewi Sartika, Jl. Nusantara and Jl. Arif Rahman Hakim. The agency claims that the system has reduced congestion.
However, street vendors on Jl. Dewi Sartika say their incomes have plummeted because of the policy. (agn)
