akarta Governor Anies Baswedan monitored on Thursday those areas affected by the recent floods and blamed the ongoing construction of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) for causing the flooding along the Jl. MT Haryono underpass in South Jakarta.
Anies said the cement used for the project had blocked the street gutter and caused underpass to flood during the heavy rain on Monday and Tuesday. Floodwaters 50 centimeters deep had swamped the areas along Jl. MT Haryono and Jl. Gatot Subroto, and caused major traffic disruption, he added.
“This is an example of a development [project] that hasn't taken the street gutter into account. We aren't blaming anyone," said Anies, and that discovering the cause of the flooding was intended to help improve the way the administration managed infrastructure projects.
Anies said he had instructed workers to dislodge the cement that blocked the gutter.
“We’re working on this today, and Insya Allah [God willing], it will soon be done,” he said.
Also on Thursday, Anies blamed the developer of the newly inaugurated Bekasi-Cawang-Kampung Melayu (Becakayu) toll road for allegedly narrowing the street gutter on East Jakarta's Jl. DI Panjaitan.
