Cilincing Police in North Jakarta have arrested three people allegedly operating as muggers in the area.

The police’s crime unit had received a report of the muggers’ activity on Wednesday, North Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Reza Arief Dewanto said.

“The police responded by immediately making a move to Jl. Cakung in Cilincing and arrested the criminals when they were arranging the plan of their next robbery,” Reza said on Thursday, adding that the muggers used to operate as a group around the area in 2017.

A member of the group, identified as Mulya Tubagus, was shot in his left leg after resisting arrest by threatening a police officer with a knife.

Another suspect, identified as M. Fathoni, tried to escape when he saw his friend being shot and he was then shot in his right leg.

The third suspect, Putra Mustakim, surrendered without resisting.

After receiving treatment in Kramat Jati Police Hospital in East Jakarta, the three suspects were taken to the Cilincing Police headquarters.

Reza said the group operated on quiet roads, threatening truck and car drivers, especially women drivers, in traffic jams, he added.

“We are still after two members of the gang. They are about 18-19 years old. The arrested gang members have been charged under Article 365 of the Criminal Code, which carries a maximum of five years imprisonment,” said Reza as quoted by kompas.com. (gis)
